Bank Independent

JULY 2026

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTS

“We don’t just provide financial services. We build relationships that strengthen our communities.”

For nearly eight decades, Bank Independent has remained committed to one simple mission: making a positive difference in people’s lives. As a locally owned, independent community bank serving North Alabama since 1947, Bank Independent has built its reputation on exceptional service, local decision-making, and meaningful relationships with the individuals, families, and businesses it serves.

From helping customers purchase their first home to supporting entrepreneurs and investing in education, Bank Independent continues to strengthen communities across the region while staying true to its local roots. We caught up with the team to learn more about their story, what sets them apart, and the advice they have for future business owners.

Tell us your story. Why did you decide to serve Athens-Limestone County?

Bank Independent’s story began in 1947 when local farmers and business leaders came together to establish The Bank of Leighton after their community lost its only bank. In 1982, The Bank of Leighton merged with The Bank of Florence to form Bank Independent, creating the foundation for the community bank it is today.

While the organization has grown throughout North Alabama, it has remained closely held, independent, and committed to making a positive difference in people’s lives. Today, Bank Independent offers a full range of financial services, including personal and business banking, mortgage lending, commercial lending, treasury management, wealth management, and convenient digital banking solutions. At the heart of everything they do is a commitment to exceptional service, local decision-making, and strengthening the communities they call home.

What makes Bank Independent stand out?

What makes Bank Independent stand out is that we are still proudly local to North Alabama and still truly independent. Our decisions are made here, by people who know our communities, our customers, and the unique needs of the families and businesses we serve. That local, independent spirit allows us to stay focused on relationships over transactions and service over sales. We are built to serve, not to sell.

That commitment shows up, not only in how we care for customers, but also in how we care for our team members and communities. Bank Independent has been consistently recognized with honors, including America’s Most Loved Workplaces and Best Banks to Work For, reflecting a culture centered on people, purpose, and long-term trust.

What exciting events or initiatives do you have coming up?

We have several exciting things coming up at Bank Independent. We recently opened our new Team Campus, which represents an important investment in our team members, our customers and the communities we serve.

Our annual School Share Drive kicks off June 29 and runs through July 17, ending with our collection day. This initiative helps provide school supplies to local students and families as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

We are also looking forward to the opening of Bank Independent Stadium on the campus of the University of North Alabama in September, which will be a major milestone for UNA and the Shoals community.

Additionally, through our partnership with UNA, any current Bank Independent customer is eligible for a 20% scholarship to the University of North Alabama, creating another meaningful way we can support education and opportunity in our region.

What advice would you give someone starting a small business?

Start with a clear plan, and make sure you understand both your numbers and your market. Know who your customers are, what problem you are solving for them and how you will manage cash flow in the early stages.

We also encourage new business owners to build a strong team of trusted advisors, including a banker. Having the right financial partner can make a big difference, whether you need help choosing the right business checking account, preparing for lending conversations, managing payments or planning for growth.

At Bank Independent, we believe small businesses are the backbone of our communities. Our advice is to ask questions early, lean on local expertise and choose partners who are invested in helping your business succeed for the long term.

What motivates you about the banking industry?

What motivates us most about this industry is the opportunity to make a positive difference in people’s lives. That is our mission, our why, our purpose, our cause and our belief.

At our core, financial services are what we do, but they are also the vehicle that allows us to help individuals, families, businesses and communities move forward. Whether we are helping someone buy a home, start a business, manage their money or plan for the future, we understand that our work connects directly to real people and real goals.

Our challenge is to execute what we do seamlessly while never losing sight of why we do it. We make a positive difference by valuing, respecting and rewarding our team members; providing quality products at a fair price; delivering exceptional service to our customers; strengthening our communities; and serving as good stewards of all that has been entrusted to us.

Who inspires you locally?

Our customers and community leaders inspire us every day. We have the privilege of working with small business owners, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, educators and local visionaries who are investing their time, talent and resources into making our communities stronger.

Their resilience, creativity and commitment remind us why local business matters. They are creating jobs, meeting needs, supporting families and helping shape the future of North Alabama. At Bank Independent, we are motivated by the people we serve and by the opportunity to support those who are making a positive difference right here at home.

From entrepreneurs and small business owners to nonprofit organizations, educators, and civic leaders, these individuals continually demonstrate resilience, innovation, and a commitment to making North Alabama a better place to live and work.

Their dedication serves as a daily reminder of why local businesses matter and reinforces Bank Independent’s commitment to supporting those who are shaping the future of our communities.
