– BBB North Alabama
For nearly eight decades, Bank Independent has remained committed to one simple mission: making a positive difference in people’s lives. As a locally owned, independent community bank serving North Alabama since 1947, Bank Independent has built its reputation on exceptional service, local decision-making, and meaningful relationships with the individuals, families, and businesses it serves.
From helping customers purchase their first home to supporting entrepreneurs and investing in education, Bank Independent continues to strengthen communities across the region while staying true to its local roots. We caught up with the team to learn more about their story, what sets them apart, and the advice they have for future business owners.
Tell us your story. Why did you decide to serve Athens-Limestone County?
Bank Independent’s story began in 1947 when local farmers and business leaders came
together to establish The Bank of Leighton after their community lost its only bank. In 1982, The Bank of Leighton merged with The Bank of Florence to form Bank Independent, creating the foundation for the community bank it is today.
While the organization has grown throughout North Alabama, it has remained closely held, independent, and committed to making a positive difference in people’s lives. Today, Bank Independent offers a full range of financial services, including personal and business banking, mortgage lending, commercial lending, treasury management, wealth management, and convenient digital banking solutions. At the heart of everything they do is a commitment to exceptional service, local decision-making, and strengthening the communities they call home.
What makes Bank Independent stand out?
What truly sets Bank Independent apart is its commitment to remaining both local and independent. Decisions are made right here in North Alabama by people who know the communities they serve and understand the unique needs of local families and businesses.
Rather than focusing on transactions, the bank prioritizes relationships and personalized service. That people-first philosophy extends beyond customers to team members and the communities they serve. This commitment has earned Bank Independent national recognition, including honors as one of America’s Most Loved Workplaces and one of the Best Banks to Work For.

What advice would you give someone starting a small business?
Start with a clear plan and understand both your finances and your market. Know who your customers are, the problem you’re solving, and how you’ll manage cash flow during those critical early stages.
Bank Independent also encourages entrepreneurs to surround themselves with trusted advisors, including a banking partner. Whether it’s selecting the right business accounts, preparing for financing, managing payments, or planning for future growth, having experienced financial guidance can make all the difference.
Above all, don’t hesitate to ask questions, lean on local expertise, and build relationships with partners who are invested in your long-term success.
